Requirements for armor ceramics and the first domestic ceramic armor plates based on boron carbide for 6B4 bulletproof vests were created by the Research Institute of Steel together with IPM of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR back in 1982. Today, the Research Institute of Steel, together with Russia's leading enterprises for the production of ceramic materials, is developing armored ceramics based on corundum, silicon carbide and boron carbide for various purposes, ranging from personal protective equipment to complex composite protective structures for armored vehicles.
